I will work to overturn Citizens United and end corporate funding of our political process.
Break Up Big Banks
Too Big To Fail and Too Big To Jail are just too big. The misuse of the enormous power of the financial industry collapsed the world economy in 2008. Now the 5 biggest banks are even bigger. At the time laws were already on the books under which wrongdoing in the financial sector should have been prosecuted. Instead Congress passed another law, the Dodd-Frank Act which, through the lobbying efforts of big banks, ended up making it even more difficult for credit unions and small financial professionals to compete with the big banks. Still not one banker went to prison and the settlements that were reached were not due to new regulation. I favor a 21st Century Glass-Steagall Act to separate traditional banking from investment banking activities.
The United States has more people in prison than any other country on earth. Private prisons and the lobbyists advocating for their industry have created a perverse system that incentivizes the incarceration of our citizens. I will end prisons-for-profit and work to reform our criminal justice system. We must end mandatory minimum sentencing for non-violent drug offences. This disproportionately affects communities of color. We must treat drug addiction as a health issue rather than a criminal issue.
I would remove marijuana from the federal list of Schedule I drugs. I support decriminalizing marijuana at the federal level so that states no longer have to fear federal action if they choose to legalize the recreational use of marijuana. The War on Drugs has disproportionately targeted African American and Latino communities. American citizens who abuse drugs have a medical problem, but have been unjustly criminalized by a profit hungry prison-industrial complex.
I want to end the militarization of our police departments. I support H.Amdt. 918 (Grayson) to HR 4870 Jun 19, 2014 (113th Congress) which would have defunded the militarization of police departments. The lobbyists of the military-industrial complex push to increase the market their military hardware.
Bankrupt Two Party Duopoly
For years the two party system has been bankrupt. They are two sides of the same coin. In city, county, state and national government, politicians are making back room deals to enrich their friends and get re-elected. It's time to end this.
The current 2-party system has become the mechanism by which Americans are divided and conquered by moneyed special interests. Party candidates are selected by party leaders and they vote along party lines without debate. There are a multitude of issues and multiple viewpoints on every issue. That cannot be neatly summed up as Democrat or Republican. We need change in the way things are done in politics. Large corporations and special interests get their way in politics and regular Americans and small businesspersons have to take what the politicians decide.
Our representatives get elected and they become the junior assemblyman, congressperson or senator. They go to Washington and get trained on how it's done by the senior career politicians who are protecting their careers and not representing us. We can change this if everyone votes. Listen to the candidates' debate the issues. Vote on the best non-incumbent available. Be skeptical of familiar names that are just moving up the political chain to higher office. Get honest people who believe in American ideals.
